Fall Anime Season
Posted by Miya on October 15th, 2012

It’s that time of year again! A change in season means a change in anime. Here is a list of what I’m currently watching, and my thoughts on them so far.

Shinsekai yori – This is one of the anime I have the most hopes for, so it will probably let me down. There isn’t enough horror anime, and while this one isn’t listed as horror, it does have a lot of creepy undertones, so fingers crossed that this will be scary and disturbing. Hanazawa Kana is in it, and the second episode had Tobita Nobuo in it. I think. He isn’t credited on MAL, but he has a very distinctive voice.

Okay. The 4th ep looks more interesting.

Kamisama Hajimemashita – My favorite so far, though that’s only based on the first episode. It’s generic shoujo (romantic?) comedy, but it was enjoyable.

OMG ostrich.

K – Oh, that was cracktacular. The ANN reviewers weren’t kidding when they said K was a gorgeous anime that was trying too hard. K has some of the best visuals I’ve ever seen in an anime. Unfortunately it’s like they spent all their budget on the animation and there wasn’t any left over for a decent story or script. It’s trying so hard to be one of the popular kids and failing miserably at it. I think that’s why the punks are trying to kill the main character, because he’s so effortlessly cool and they’re lame and they want to eliminate all the cool people in the world so they’ll be the only ones left and then they’ll be cool. That’s the story I was making up in my head and it was a lot better than whatever was going on in the anime. The best part of the episode was when the guy with the naked cat lady was at school. It was just being what it was, and it was working. Then the dorks came back. And the Engrish. I couldn’t decide whether I wanted them to stop because it was embarrassing, or keep going because it was so lolworthy. K also gets points for being a seiyuupalooza! It has FukuJun, OnoD (all it needs is HiroC), Nakamura Yuuichi, Miyano Mamoru, Sugita Tomokazu, Sawashiro Miyuki, Sakurai Takahiro, and Horie Yui, though I don’t like those last two. K is stupid as hell, but it’s worth it for the snark. I just have to remember to watch it when I’m sleep deprived (well, more sleep deprived than I usually am) and more easily amused.

This show is so bad it’s good. It did try hard in the first episode, but it also doesn’t take itself seriously.

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun – I really didn’t like the first episode. It’s supposed to be a comedy/romance and they forgot the comedy. Whether I like shoujo depends on what kind it is. If it’s comedy, or comedy + romance, it has a good chance. If it’s drama or drama + romance I’ll probably hate it. I don’t like drama/romance anime and manga in general. The first thing I think of when I hear that is either Nana (sorry Amber, that one Nana is a slut and I can’t stand her) or Clannad, melodramatic soap operas that just leave me rolling my eyes.

The main character is still a bitch, but the second episode was surprisingly enjoyable. I really like the new girl, she better be in the series more because she adds a lot to it.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! – Fukuyama Jun! Eye patch girl is crazy, she’s way too old to be acting that way. All I kept thinking was “Smack her JunJun!” And he did, but obviously not hard enough because she kept talking. IDK, I guess she’s supposed to be cute, but she’s just meddlesome and annoying to me.

The second episode was better. Eye patch girl wasn’t as annoying. No wonder she’s crazy, her sister beats her with a ladle. She probably has brain damage.

Zetsuen no Tempest – This anime has potential. Will it do anything with that potential? Experience tells me no. I just hope it doesn’t turn out as bad as Romeo x Juliet, because I don’t think I can survive that again.

The second episode wasn’t any better or worse. The music is wonderful.

BTOOOM! – Watching this because Dao said if you liked Mirai Nikki you would probably like this. It wasn’t as bad as ANN said. Not surprising, I rarely ever agree with them.

Second ep was difficult to watch. I like Himiko so far.

Ixion Saga DT – Eh. I watched it because ANN said it was funny, but since I already knew what was going to happen so it wasn’t as good as it could have been.

The ED guy looks good with his hair down, but he really will have ED at this rate. Imagine the shit of those carrier pigeons. Where’s the shocked face smiley? :blank: That’s as close as I can get.

Little Busters! – I’ll probably regret this.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I like it when the first girl in the group beats up the big black haired one, and I like cats. That’s the best I have to say about it. At least it doesn’t make me want to gouge my eyes out like Clannad does.

I don’t hate it yet.

Robotics;Notes – I didn’t like or dislike it.

Haven’t decided on Code:Breaker, Girls und Panzer, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, or Magi yet. I heard there’s animal abuse in Code:Breaker, something I have no tolerance for. Unless the next episode gets stellar reviews (if ANN does the 2nd ep) I won’t be watching. Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb – I haven’t finished the Hidamari Sketch I’m watching now. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: The Animation – more animal abuse. Hayate no Gotoku! Can’t Take My Eyes Off You – no Wakamoto Norio no watching. Psycho-Pass – I was looking forward to this but sexism oozes from every review and interview about it.

I’m more interested in the winter anime season. New Chihayafuru and Haganai!

Why say sorry? She was a huge slut, I watched it for the music. And the manga (where it left off years ago and may very well end) was more about the Romi Paku voiced Nana, which is why I kept reading. I’m not finding anything this season amazing either, although nice to hear a new Chihayafuru and Haganai in the winter.

I’ve actually been really surprised by this season. I’m enjoying a lot of the comedies. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Ixion Saga DT, Chuunibyou, Kamisama, K… But Shinsekai yori has been disappointing. I knew Zetsuen no Tempest wouldn’t live up to its possibilities, but I thought Shinsekai yori at least had a chance. The last episode was weak.

How bad is Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo? The ANN reviewers gave it such bad reviews I stayed away from it, but I don’t trust their opinions.

It’s watchable I guess, although it’s probably not something you’d enjoy. Most of the characters are pretty generic, and honestly Mashiro is annoying with how helpless she is. The story improves a bit as it goes on.

I guess for me there’s too much shoujo, not enough shounen that i enjoy. There’s the third season of Bakuman, but I’m not desperate to watch it like with other shounen, like Kuroko no Basket.
